What is Botox®?

In the U.S., Botox treatments are the most popular cosmetic procedure. They are used primarily to treat dynamic wrinkles, or those that result from repeated facial expressions, such as frowning, squinting, or smiling.

A form of botulinum toxin known as Botox is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is a neurotoxic protein. Using this cosmetic treatment, wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging are reduced by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause them.

The injections are performed using a fine needle. By blocking nerve impulses to muscles, the toxin causes them to relax. Consequently, wrinkles and lines are reduced and the skin appears smoother.

How long will the results last?

The wrinkle-reducing effects of Botox treatments vary according to the patient and the treatment area. Results typically last between 3 and 6 months. To maintain your results, your cosmetic surgeon will repeat treatment, adjusting dosage and techniques as necessary.
