What is liposuction?

A beautiful human form is characterized by balance, proportion, and contour. Almost any area of the body can be sculpted with liposuction, resulting in dramatic improvements with natural-looking results

In liposuction surgery, excess fat deposits are removed to improve the figure of the patient’s body. While liposuction is best known as a fat removal procedure, it is also one of the most effective procedures to help a patient refine his or her shape. In fact, cosmetic surgeons often use liposuction to refine the results of other procedures, as no other technique allows for such detailed improvements in body contour.

Each year, both men and women undergo liposuction to achieve a variety of different goals. Others wish to find jeans that fit more comfortably, while others wish to look better in a swimsuit. When it comes to men, liposuction is often an effective way of treating gynecomastia. Often, cosmetic surgeons use liposuction to enhance the results of other procedures. In most cases, liposuction is performed on the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, neck, and upper arms. Breast fat, calves, and ankle fat can also be removed with this method.

Based on the nature of the procedure, liposuction can safely be performed under local anesthesia, intravenous sedation, or local anesthesia. You will be advised of the most appropriate anesthesia method by your cosmetic surgeon at Ridgewood Plastic Surgery.

You will be required to make one or more small incisions near the affected area by your cosmetic surgeon. Through these incisions, a cannula, or thin tube, is inserted to loosen fat beneath the skin. The fat is then suctioned out. Based on the number of areas to be treated, the procedure can take under an hour or up to three hours or more.

It is one of the quickest procedures to recover from, with patients typically back on their feet after two days of recovery. Further, liposuction permanently removes fat cells from the treatment areas. It is also extremely effective at removing stubborn fat that won’t budge no matter how much you exercise or what kind of diet habits you follow.

You can still gain and lose weight in parts of your body that have not been treated. Weight gain after your procedure will diminish the results slightly, but the treated areas will still appear more contoured.

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure – it is a fat removal procedure. After surgery, patients must maintain an exercise routine and diet to maintain optimal weight
