What is otoplasty?
Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery, is a surgical procedure that is performed to alter the shape, position, or size of the ears. It is often used to correct birth defects or deformities in the ears, or to improve the appearance of the ears.
There are several different techniques that may be used during otoplasty, depending on the specific goals of the procedure. Some common techniques include:
Pinning back the ears: This involves making an incision in the back of the ear and suturing the cartilage to a more natural position closer to the head.
Reducing the size of the ears entails removing excess cartilage and skin from them.
Reshaping the ears: This may require reshaping the cartilage or skin of the ears to create a more natural or desired appearance.
For a period of time following an otoplasty, patients are typically required to wear headbands or dressings over their ears as a way to protect and aid their ears in healing. Following the procedure, most people can return to work or school within several weeks, although more strenuous activities may require a longer recovery time.
